Crochet Christmas Bell Ornament with Flared Bottom

As promised, here we are with another bell ornament just for you! Because a little handmade collection can make your Christmas decorations feel that extra warmth and special.

The pattern is worked from the top down in continuous rounds using basic single crochet stitches and simple increases.

Gather the Basic Supplies

  • Yarn: Use any yarn you have on hand. The original tutorial uses DK-weight (lightweight) yarn in the shade Green and White.
  • Crochet hook: A 4 mm (US G-6) crochet hook is used in the original tutorial. You can also try a 3.5 mm hook if you want a firmer fabric.
  • Scissors: You’ll need these to cut the yarn when you’re finished.
  • Stitch marker: This is especially helpful because the bell is worked in continuous rounds without joining at the end of each round.
  • Yarn needle: Use a yarn needle to weave in the loose ends and attach the hanging loop.

Pattern Notes:

  • This crochet bell is crocheted in continuous rounds without joining.
  • You can place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you work.
  • The pattern begins at the top of the bell and gradually increases to form the rounded body and flared bottom.
  • Lastly, the ornament/bell is left holow so the small jinglw bell can hang freely inside.

Crochet Christmas Bell Ornament with Flared Bottom Pattern: 5 Simple Steps

Step 1. Crochet the Top of the Bell

Start with the yarn and make the magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1. Work 6 sc into MR. Pull ring tight. (6 sts)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)

Rnd 3: 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st. Rep from around. (18 sts)

Rnd 4: 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st. Rep from around. (24 sts)

Rnd 5: 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st. Rep from around. (30 sts)

Rnd 6: 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st. Rep from around. (36 sts)

Rnds 7–8: 1 sc in each st around. (36 sts)

Tip: The increases in Rounds 2–6 gradually shape the top of the bell. After completing Rounds 7 and 8, your crochet piece should begin to curve downward, forming a rounded dome.

Step 2. Shape the Body of the Bell

Continue working!

Rnd 9: 1 sc in each of next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st. Rep from around. (42 sts)

Rnds 10–16: 1 sc in each st around. (42 sts)

Your Santa bell should now have a rounded top and a slightly elongated body. Keep your single crochet stitches firm and even to help the ornament hold its shape. You can use the yarn-under single crochet technique for a tighter, amigurumi-style fabric.

Step 4: Crochet the Flared Bottom

How to Change Yarn Colors? For a smooth color transition, begin the last single crochet of Round 17 with white yarn. When two loops remain on your hook, yarn over with black and pull through both loops to complete the stitch.

Change the color of the yarn at the beginning of Round 17.

Rnd 17: 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st. Rep from around. (56 sts)

Rnd 18: 1 sc in each st around. (56 sts)

Fasten off the white yarn and weave in any loose ends.

Tip: Round 17 adds 14 increases, widening the bottom of the ornament to create its classic bell shape. Make sure you have 56 stitches before starting the final round.

Step 5: Crochet the Hanging Chain

Now that the bell is complete, it’s time to make the hanging chain that will also hold the small jingle bell inside the ornament.

Using green yarn:

Hanging Chain: Ch 60. Fasten off, leaving yarn tails for attaching the jingle bell and securing the hanger.

The length of this chain can be adjusted depending on how long you want the hanging loop and how far the jingle bell should hang inside the ornament.

Your Christmas bell with flares at the bottom is ready in just 20 minutes. Enjoyed?
